A message from the President

A Message from the Chairman           Jackie Chan

I remember back on August 11th, 1993, Anita Mui, Eric Tsang and myself gathered a whole bunch of artists discussed the idea of forming a group to help performing artists in Hong Kong. Some of the people we gathered included: Michael Hui Koon-Man, Chow Yun-Fat, Peter Lam Kin-Ngok, John Shum Kin-Fai, Shi-Nan Sun, Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk, Sandra Ng Kwan-Yu, Danny Lee Sau-Yin, Richard Ng Yiu-Hon, Frankie Chan Fan-Kei, Natalis Chan Bak-Cheung, Tommy Wong Kwong-Leung, Carina Lau Kar-Ling, Dennis Chan Kwok-San, Philip Chan Yan-Kin, Stephen Tung Wai and others. On August 25th, 1993, the Hong Kong Performing Artists Guild was officially established. Michael Hui was the chairman during the first and second term, and I became the chairman during the third and fourth term. It’s hard to believe that the organization has been established for 21 years already. And this year, I’ve been honored again with the invitation of taking up the chairman position for the 11th term.

Even though I’ve been making movies for over 50 years, the place I love the most is still Hong Kong. This is where I grew up. This is where my good friends are. And this is where I met my brothers, my family in the entertainment business.

The Hong Kong film industry was once praised as the “Hollywood of the East”, and was highly respected in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China. Over recent years, the China film industry has grown rapidly but I see it as an opportunity for Hong Kong artists and filmmakers to develop and expand further abroad.

Even though most artists today have managers who take care of their regular daily activities, but when an artist is faced with a complicated situation, HKPAG can step in and help protect the rights and interests of an artist. We can help voice their concerns. HKPAG is the best back-up support team for artists in Hong Kong. I hope that everyone in the entertainment industry, as well as our friends, continue spreading the united energy and love of HKPAG; continue the spirit of helping each other and looking after each other. At the same time, I also hope to do the best that I can in introducing our talented artists to the world and making people aware of Hong Kong film. I hope even more people will recognize artists working in the field and hopefully increase the presence of Hong Kong artists in the China film industry and international market.

HKPAG is now working hard towards helping artists obtain more rights and benefits. And as the chairman HKPAG, this is also what I aim for and I hope that this can be achieved.
