I'd love to know the circumstances surrounding this round of golf. Che Guevarra's putting wearing a black cap and Fidel's wearing the big glasses. I just watched The Buena Vista Social Club and pictures from this day were featured in the first few minutes. It cracked me up. The revolutionaries at play, at one of the most bourgeoise games you can imagine (and my favorite). It's like, what's wrong with this picture. The photographer, Alberto Korda, reports that Che let Fidel win that day....
Che was one cute little revolutionary (or terrorist, depending on your point of view). If he'd have survived, I just wonder ... he was so charismatic.

Che's in the rough - a little chip to the green

Winter rules for Fidel, and someone better kick that one in the hole, if they know what's good for them...

Alberto Korda's famous and reportedly the most reproduced picture in the history of photography - Che Guevarra

They probably were real duffers. I'd love to travel to Cuba. I've been reading about it, and it's at least in this hemisphere. It's the #1 destination for Canadians on vacation. But we're not supposed to travel there. Castro in power and influential Cuban Floridians keep this embargo going. I think when Castro's dead though, the embargo will have to fall.

I worked in Cuba for four years.
It´s an extremly beautiful island, the vast majority of the Cubans living in Cuba detest Fidel, they want him dead.Fidelcontrols his people through the petty details, neighbour spies on neighbour to stay in good standing with the local "guardians of the revolution".But the ususal spy work consists of "My neighbour has a new pair of Nikes,he must be hanging around with the tourists, maybe his sister sleeping around with them"For this great piece of information, the informent will be rewarded with an extra bottle of cooking oil.Fidel thrives from the misery of his people ,he needs the embargo just as much as the U.S administration.
Fidel has done a brilliant job of making the Cubans of Miami look like the bad guys,a recent exemple is the Elian gonzalez case.Fidel sent his secret service to the farthers house in Cuba. The farther was told "You´re going to be a good revolutionary and kick up hell, demanding your son´s return to Cuba, you don´t want to be a bad revolutionary do you?" The farther like nearly every single Cuban would prefer to have his son away from him in Miami rather then growing up as one of Fidels object, but that not exactly how things were portrayed to the American public. You were made to believe that the bad Miami Cubans were getting in the way of a farther and son reuniting.
The Clinton administration welcomed Fidels Secret service on the U.S territory, they were the "body guards"of Elians Gonzalez´s father, just in case the dad might choose to stay in Miami with his kid,Fidels mobsters were there to make sure that it wouldn´t happen. The Bush admistration would have collaborated just as much if not more. You see,the embargo is a mutual agreement between Fidel and the U.S political elite,Fidel´s threat to the U.S,"you lift the embargo and 10 million Cuban refugees will flood your shores,I gave you a little taste of that with the Mariel boatlift, jsut so that we know what you´d have to deal with"
Nothing is at it seems, and there is so much more to be said ...

Thanks for that insight Woody.
Preserving the revolution. Where the hell was pure communism ever a success? I understand that without the travel dollars since the fall of the Soviet Union and the cessation of its subsidies, Cuba would never make it. True?
Apparently, the US travel restrictions which were more relaxed under Clinton definitely became tougher (or the laws more enforced) under the Bush administration. I'm pretty convinced that has a lot to do with the power of the Cubans in Florida.
I think I read that or else I figured out was happening during the Elian Gonzalez fiasco. Had the mother not died, the father may not have gotten involved in such a controversy and he would've been happy to have his kid in the US. But whether he wanted to or not assert a claim, I always thought, poor guy, he had absolutely no choice.
The atmosphere of snitching, which seems to be the only way a totalitarian regime can survive, must be unbearable. I read that when you travel people are very friendly but don't get involved in any discussions with individuals which could put them in danger. Chilling.
I also heard that Castro doesn't want the embargo lifted because it protects him as well, continues his control (can't blame him for being paranoid considering the Bay of Pigs). I can't see how it's that still as critical considering that every other country in the western world, democracies, has access to Cuba.
What did you do in Cuba? Do I just have a romanticized ideal of what travel to Cuba would be like? I guess I think it's a place frozen in time----kind of like some of the the former Eastern Bloc countries which are becoming popular travel destinations.
P.S. Che is still a sexy revolutionary. Mmmmm, I like his look. I don't want to know the truth about him.

Well now they have the help from Chavez and his petro dollars, but yes the prime source of survival is indeed tourism and family in the U.S
Cuba is an incredibly beautiful place,it is frozen in time, and is a fascinating place to visit right now before Fidel dies. Some Americans visit in a "para legal" way.
The real embargo is the self imposed embargo.Cuban legislation and beaurocrats make it extremly difficult for foreigners to trade and invest with Cuba,Fidel wants it that way.
We were in Cuba to train their military divers as Scuba diving instructors for the tourist resorts. We couldn´t turn them out fast enough, after a month working in a tourist resort the dashing young Che look alike instructor was packing his bags to follow the new wife to Germany,Italy,Canada or where ever the latest Scuba student was from.Join the Navy and see the world had a whole new meaning in Cuba.Haha!

If you were there four years you must have really seen a lot of the place. You'll have to write a "travel tips" by Woody list.
The diving instructors weren't just teaching in the water, huh? That's funny. I guess given the opportunity people are enthusiastic about leaving. Maybe I can find a nice man in Cuba!

Fact vs Fiction. It doesn't change the fact that as the poster boy for revolutionaries, Che beats Mao any day.
