I worked in Cuba for four years.
It´s an extremly beautiful island, the vast majority of the Cubans living in Cuba detest Fidel, they want him dead.Fidelcontrols his people through the petty details, neighbour spies on neighbour to stay in good standing with the local "guardians of the revolution".But the ususal spy work consists of "My neighbour has a new pair of Nikes,he must be hanging around with the tourists, maybe his sister sleeping around with them"For this great piece of information, the informent will be rewarded with an extra bottle of cooking oil.Fidel thrives from the misery of his people ,he needs the embargo just as much as the U.S administration.
Fidel has done a brilliant job of making the Cubans of Miami look like the bad guys,a recent exemple is the Elian gonzalez case.Fidel sent his secret service to the farthers house in Cuba. The farther was told "You´re going to be a good revolutionary and kick up hell, demanding your son´s return to Cuba, you don´t want to be a bad revolutionary do you?" The farther like nearly every single Cuban would prefer to have his son away from him in Miami rather then growing up as one of Fidels object, but that not exactly how things were portrayed to the American public. You were made to believe that the bad Miami Cubans were getting in the way of a farther and son reuniting.
The Clinton administration welcomed Fidels Secret service on the U.S territory, they were the "body guards"of Elians Gonzalez´s father, just in case the dad might choose to stay in Miami with his kid,Fidels mobsters were there to make sure that it wouldn´t happen. The Bush admistration would have collaborated just as much if not more. You see,the embargo is a mutual agreement between Fidel and the U.S political elite,Fidel´s threat to the U.S,"you lift the embargo and 10 million Cuban refugees will flood your shores,I gave you a little taste of that with the Mariel boatlift, jsut so that we know what you´d have to deal with"
Nothing is at it seems, and there is so much more to be said ...
